How do you choose a horse for an Indian Wedding?

I have heard a fairytale in which the prince comes to his wedding on a white horse, and takes his bride on his horse to his kingdom... I am not complaining, or discouraging the groom to use a horse on his wedding day, I only want to express a little warning or concern about the safety of the horse and groom I would like to share my experience with you today.

Due to the heatwave, most of the wedding took place at night in India. It is quite normal to have a groom sitting on the horse and around 70 to 80 ladies and men walking behind the horse and in front of the horse. We hired a musical band who played Bollywood songs on loud speakers, and approximately 20 young people were dancing with the tune of the music, while around 7 people lighted fireworks. This is the way to celebrate an event. It is very nice, very enjoyable, and it could last for hours, for the journey of a mile. Last October, in 2009, I was in Mumbai and I witnessed an incident where the horse was running with a groom, and the groom was struggling to hold on. The thing did cool down in no time, since there was traffic on the road. In fact, I was told by someone that the horse had been scared of the fire crackers, and the trainee was not with the horse at the time of the incident.

If you are having a wedding in India, or in any part of the world, then you should wear a helmet, because health and safety is far from a wedding horse.

In the UK we do not have this problem. When you choose a horse for your wedding, you should take the following into consideration. The company you are hiring from has to have a reputation for fulfilling the service for a number of years. It should be registered and monitored by health and safety checks by the council. A horse should be well trained for the job. You should have insurance for the job, and public liability covers. Also you should meet the horse before the event. You should have a little training, and you should get on and off the horse with the wedding clothes, before it is too late to practice. Always have the horse trainer with the horse, and during your trip, before hiring, get to know the horse a little bit. Ask for the horses name. Also, avoid fireworks during your journey.

Get more information regarding registration at www.DEFRA.gov.uk, which is licensed for animal transporters.

One incident an another person's wedding should not put you off. Riding a horse is a joy, and can be a sport or means of transportation for some. Hiring a horse at a wedding could cost £300 to £500. It depends on the location and the time of year. Good Luck!
